![]() ![]() In 2013, HD Media bought the Herald-Dispatch from Champion Publishing. In 2007, the Herald-Dispatch again changed hands, first going to GateHouse Media and then to Champion Publishing, Inc. It was sold that year to the Honolulu Star-Bulletin (now the Honolulu Star-Advertiser and quickly resold to Gannett Company, Inc. Joseph Harvey Long, the owner of the Huntington Publishing Company, bought the newspaper in 1927 and the Long family owned it until 1971. It is the result of the 1909 merger of the Herald and the Dispatch, two Huntington newspapers. In 2021, HD Media moved from its longtime headquarters on Fifth Avenue to Braley Road in Huntington.Īs of 2016, the Herald-Dispatch’s circulation was 27,045.The Huntington Herald-Dispatch covers local news and community events in the city of Huntington and across southwestern West Virginia. HD Media acquired it in a last-minute bid, foiling Ogden Newspapers’ attempt to do the same. In 2018, the Charleston Gazette-Mail declared bankruptcy and was put up for auction. Then, in 2017, HD Media acquired the Logan Banner, Williamson Daily News, Coal Valley News, and Pineville Independent Herald. The following year, HD Media quit printing the Herald-Dispatch in Huntington and contracted that work out to the Charleston Gazette-Mail. In 2014, HD Media acquired the Wayne News. In 2013, Champion Industries sold the paper to HD Media, which had been formed by Doug Reynolds, the son of Champion’s owner, Marshall Reynolds. ![]() In 2007, Champion Industries, a Huntington firm, purchased the newspaper. In 1979, the Advertiser ceased publication and merged into the Herald-Dispatch, with many of the reporters from the afternoon daily going to work on Huntington’s lone remaining newspaper. The Advertiser boasted a higher circulation than the Herald-Dispatch for many years, but as reading habits changed, afternoon newspaper circulation declined. Eight months later, the Hawaiian company was purchased by Gannett Co. was sold to the owners of the Honolulu Star-Bulletin. Local ownership ended in January 1971, when the Huntington Publishing Co. Edward Long’s widow, Hilda Long, became president and publisher of the Advertiser and Helen Birke became chairman and publisher of the Herald-Dispatch. Birke, died in 1963, two widows took charge of Huntington newspaper publishing. Both stations were later sold.Īfter Long’s two sons, Edward and Walker, died, and Gideon’s nephew, William D. The publishing company also purchased radio station WSAZ during this time and in 1949 started one of the nation’s first TV stations, WSAZ-TV, Channel 3. Gideon died in 1950 and Long in 1958 at the age of 95. Both men were publishers until their deaths. The mechanical and business operations were combined while the two news staffs operated independently. ![]() The Herald-Dispatch built a new home just a few doors down.Īfter a brief rivalry, the two publishers announced a merger of the two organizations as the Huntington Publishing Co., with Long as chairman and Gideon as president. Then in 1924, Colonel Long bought the northwest corner of Fifth Avenue and Tenth Street to erect a building for his paper. When it and the Herald merged in 1909, a stock company owned the newspaper until Dave Gideon became sole owner in 1919. Eighteen months later he sold it and bought the Advertiser. In 1893, Joseph Harvey Long, a young printer from Pennsylvania by way of Wheeling, arrived in Huntington to buy the Herald, which had begun publication in 1890. It became a daily publication as the Advertiser in 1889. The Independent soon merged with the Cabell Press, and the resulting publication was named the Weekly Advertiser.
