Literally anybody not intimately familiar with Star. Additional features and updates will be released as they are developed." as the only disclaimer. The whole thing is written in the present tense, with big play now buttons and like 2 small disclaimers saying "Note: Star Citizen Alpha 3.18 is currently available to download and play. ![]() Our current understanding is you will be given the option of having your Squadron 42 character, who musters out of the Navy at the.Ĭan we stop and clarify what "alpha" means real quick? Squadron 42 is the single-player component, a story-driven campaign where you enlist as a UEE Navy combat pilot. Star Citizen is the MMO component, a first-person experience in a simulated 30th-century universe. There are two components to Cloud Imperium Games' (CIG) project. Open a incognito browser window and follow the experience of a new potential player. My only wish is that it was an easier sell. It's a live service game just like any other, practically speaking. They are basically advertising it as a released game (see if you can find the single reference to "alpha" here: ), in game purchases have been live for years, you can grind and save your progress etc etc. Just basically a walking simulator. For all intents and purposes the game is already released. There are a few missions to do, but everything feels like an empty stage set. Not a lot to do: Yes, you can get out of your spaceship and walk around, but take a look at the screenshots. ![]() Yeah, you can trade too, but the economy isn’t in, so it’s often a frustrating experience that ends in losing all cargo because of a bug or griefing. There’s barely one starsystem done, only one gameplay mechanic/profession done (mining). At this stage, nobody even knows when the game will be done.Plenty of crashes, desync and bugs galore. Im an old backer and I seriously can’t recommend buying SC at this stage, unless you’re interested in helping out with catching bugs. Right now Star Citizen isn't anywhere near as complete or polished as Elite in terms of gameplay and everything but the immersiveness of the setting and being able to walk around and such makes it a very cool experience. I know it sounds like I'm shitting on the game but I do genuinely enjoy playing it, it's just one of those games I recommend cautiously because it's a very unfinished game/tech demo and when I got into it I had a lot of false expectations about it based on what I'd read and heard. Some of the ships can get very expensive and quite frankly I'd steer clear of paying any more than the cost of the cheaper ships until the game is more complete. In terms of the real life cost to get a ship the cheapest ones are $40 and you can upgrade (ex: if you want to buy a $50 ship, you can trade in your $40 and pay $10). Ships are purchasable in-game but it's a bit of a grind to get them and persistence isn't fully implemented yet so they might be wiped at some point - up to you if it's worth it. Stuff like exploration, data, refueling etc you see in the ship descriptions are just concepts at the moment. Performance is also an issue for a lot of people so make sure your specs are up to date.Ĭombat, mining and trade are really the only "finished" gameplay loops. It's playable most of the time, but some of the bugs can get very irritating. The game is very buggy in virtually every aspect of gameplay. ![]() That being said, there's a few things I think are very important to be aware of: It's all pretty enjoyable and the community is quite good. In terms of gameplay there's a bunch of missions and activities you can do, like trading, mining (both from your ship and on foot, there's also caves) and of course, combat. ![]() It's a really cool and immersive experience, visually it's stunning. The big difference in Star Citizen is that you can get out of your ship and walk around it's interior, as well as detailed outposts, space stations and cities. ![]()
